Meet the Team at Allied Protek – Cristina Serrano

At Allied Protek, our core values are ingrained across all our teams. As a whole, we’re composed of individuals in engineering, design, project management, procurement, administration and our fantastic tradesmen.

In today’s ‘Meet the Team’ blog, we introduce you to Cristina Serrano, who joined our electrical engineering team at the start of 2024 at our Grimsby offices.

Cristina, welcome to Allied Protek! Tell us a bit more about your job role and what it entails.

Thank you, I’m really excited to be here! At Allied Protek I am an Electrical Engineer, forming part of the electrical engineering team. It’s a bit difficult to describe my current job role as I am working on a confidential project, but nonetheless, it’s one that is super interesting and I’m sure I’m going to learn so much whilst working on it.

Is the electrical engineering pathway a route that you have always wanted to take?

Yes, I’ve always been interested in engineering. Since an early age, I was exposed to engineering by family members and my curiosity slowly grew over time. I think as I got older and slowly comprehended more and more, coinciding with Maths and Science lessons at school, I started to realise that this might be something I wanted to do in the future. The idea of creating and improving systems, especially with the technology used nowadays really excites me.

Electrical engineering has always been my passion, focus and the direction going forward as I continue my higher education and career. I have been lucky enough to have been exposed to C&I in previous job roles which has been fun and it’s beneficial to have that added knowledge.

Tell us a bit more about your studies. Where did you study, what did you study and where?

Following on from my secondary education, I started my engineering career through HETA, becoming an Electrical Draughting and Design Apprentice. Over the years I have slowly progressed from draughting, to design and now to engineering. It has been a fun journey so far and hopefully an even more exciting journey in the many years ahead.

Currently, I am studying towards my HND and NEBOSH. My main goal is to achieve my full degree via the top-up course at Sheffield Hallam University in the future.

Engineering is a significantly male-dominated industry, but more and more females are considering it as a future career path. What would you say to those girls currently at school or college who are perhaps considering this field as a career or further study option?

Engineering has this misconception because it is male-dominated, but my experience has been to the contrary. Everybody has been so lovely and has always been there to lend a hand. There are also more females in engineering than you might think. If you are interested, make the jump and give it a go. You have nothing to lose, and if it is anything like my experience, I’m sure it’ll be a good one.
