Allied Protek Apprentice Make National Press for WorldSkills UK
For Macaulay Revell, entering the WorldSkills UK competition was a life-changing experience that drove him to develop his talents.
Macaulay Revell, a 21-year-old sheet-metal worker at engineering firm Allied Protek, didn’t agree with his school careers adviser that he should go to university, despite having attained good grades. It’s a decision he’s never regretted.
Half-way through a four-year apprenticeship at the Grimsby Institute, a talent-spotting tutor entered him in the WorldSkills UK competition: a prestigious event that showcases the best vocational education and skills in the UK.

Having successfully navigated his way through a gruelling two-year selection process, including regional heats, and national and European finals, he was selected to represent Team UK at the 2017 WorldSkills International competition in Abu Dhabi last year. Macaulay competed in the Construction Metal Work competition, which saw entries from 36 other nations around the world.
“To be honest, I wasn’t that keen on even entering the competition because I thought it would be too much on top of my apprenticeship work, and I wasn’t sure how well I’d do,” says Macaulay. “But looking back, I’m very glad that I entered because it’s easily the best thing ever to have happened to me”.
