Meet the Team at Allied Protek – Richard Goodwin (Process BIM Manager)

In today’s ‘Meet the Team’ blog, we introduce you to our Process BIM Manager, Richard Goodwin. As a relatively new starter, Richard joined the Allied Protek team back in February 2024 and is based within our Grimsby office. Continue reading below to read more about Richard’s role, his background and also a mammoth personal challenge that he will be embarking on shortly!

Richard, you’ve been at Allied Protek for a couple of months now and we hope you’ve found your feet! Tell us a bit about your role as Process BIM Manager, what it entails and how you’ve found your first few months here at AP.

Everyone at Allied Protek has been extremely welcoming, so thanks to those I’ve met so far! In my role as Process BIM Manager, I will be looking at the processes we have around collaboration & coordination, as well as implementing & augmenting documentation and procedures in line with ISO standards, with the aim of obtaining BIM accreditation for the organisation.

How did you get into the engineering industry? Was it always part of your aims from a young age?

I actually graduated in Computer Science & started in IT for another local engineering company. It was quickly identified that I could apply those skills in a complementary role to engineers. Creating logical and functional folder structures, administrating Plant 3D and then I moved into a BIM-focused role. I feel especially suited to this role because of my background and not being biased towards any particular discipline. I just aim to get all disciplines working together with the information they need as efficiently as possible.

You’ve got a significant personal task ahead of you next week! Before we touch on that, what are some of your hobbies outside of work?

A huge passion of mine outside of work is motorsport. If it has an engine and wheels, I’ll watch them race. I’m a Manchester United supporter, but I should probably keep that quiet these days! I also enjoy a bit of gaming when I have time!

On May 11th, you’re taking part in a marathon hike on the North Norfolk coast in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. That’s some trek! What is the story behind taking part in this event and what has driven you to embark on this?

Over the past 10 months, I have lost 40kg in body weight. About halfway through this journey, I saw that Macmillan was organising these ‘Mighty Hikes’. Unfortunately, I have seen Macmillan & their incredible work first-hand. They’re definitely a charity worth supporting. I decided to set myself the target of hiking a full marathon because I love to challenge myself while trying to raise some money for this magnificent cause.

How has the training been going for it? What has been your main focus?

Given my loss in weight I have been doing all kinds of things. As I was in no shape at all. I’ve been doing a lot of indoor cycling using Zwift, weight training and also walking a lot, too!

For people wishing to learn more about your task or wishing to donate, where can they do this?
