Allied Protek Apprentices Set For National Stage
It gives us great pleasure to celebrate our two metal apprentices Bradley Clare and Macaulay Reavill taking skills honed in Grimsby to a national stage. The pair will compete in the Semta WorldSkills UK Construction MetalWork Final next month, with the full backing of our workshop manager Dave Smith and their tutor, Nick Marshall.
SEMTA – the Science, Engineering, Manufacturing and Technologies Alliance – is a not-for-profit organisation responsible for engineering skills for the future of the UK’s most advanced sectors.
On 18th November the pair will compete in the final during a three-day trip the Birmingham NEC where they will construct a four-legged crane base with jig from drawings and limited materials, against eight of their contemporaries and the top three from last year, including last years winner, Luke. Their finished work will have to have a tolerance of less than half a millimetre, underlining the exacting requirements of the industry they are learning. The final will include a range of fabrication-related tasks including assembly, cutting, forming, joining, marking out and shaping.
The pair came sixth and seventh in the regional event, from 80 applicants, and now face the public event, with one day open to people to watch the techniques.
Bradley said: “The college put us forward and Allied Protek has sponsored us, so we really feel we are representing both. We’re delighted to have been recognised and are looking forward to it.”
Our workshop manager, Dave, sang the duo’s praises by saying “All the apprentices we have got are showing real enthusiasm for the job. I have been in this trade since I was a boy and they are some of the best I have seen.”
Macaulay added: “We have had to do some work in preparation. Some of the processes we don’t actually do, so we’ve put some practice in. We’re happy with what we are doing though.”
If successful, they could find themselves in Abu Dhabi, competing as part of a UK squad in a global challenge. We are proud to be able to support Bradley and Macaulay and hope you can join us in wishing the pair the best of luck on November 18th!
